Jerry Leg received an A.B. degree in mathematics and a secondary teaching credential, both from U.C. Berkeley, and taught high school mathematics, physical science, and computer science courses for twenty years in a low-income, ethnically diverse community. During that time, some of his accomplishments included using the Harvard Project Physics curriculum, which featured examining classic physical models from an historical viewpoint, developing a course that integrated pre-calculus, physics and programming exercises to simulate physical situations, and pioneering the use of equipment in experiments that interfaced with the game port of the Apple IIe computers to collect data using remote sensors. Toward the end of that phase of his career, he was part of the field test of the ARISE Project (Applications Reform in Secondary Education) and was responsible for implementing the curriculum at two schools in his district.
More recently, Jerry was a graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University, receiving both an M.A. and an Ed.D. in mathematics education under the direction of Dr. Henry O. Pollak. During that time, he was a national teacher trainer for the Mathematics: Modeling Our World textbook series, wrote two chapters for one textbook and about half of another entire textbook (both related to teaching with a modeling approach), and worked at different times as an adjunct instructor and a tenure-track instructor at local community colleges. One course that he taught during that time featured a modeling approach to studying intermediate algebra, and he piloted another course at that same school that featured modeling in the behavior and social sciences. Additionally, while still a graduate student, Teachers College employed him as an adjunct instructor for three graduate level courses: Numerical Methods of Computability, Introduction to Mathematical Modeling, and Teaching Applied Mathematics. His dissertation featured both active modeling and examination of models with secondary pre-algebra students in Newark, NJ. The work was finalized in 2003, which is when his doctoral degree was conferred.
Jerry currently is a tenure-track assistant professor in the mathematics department at California State University, Fullerton. He was a participant at the ICMI Study 14 working group on the teaching of applications and mathematical modeling in Dortmund, Germany last February, and presented a paper for Topic Study Group (teaching of modeling and applications) at ICME-10 in Copenhagen this July. He has done approximately fifty workshops on aspects of the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling at professional meetings and conferences over the last ten years. He is currently writing modules for the Resources for Performance-Based Achievement in Mathematics Project (NSF #0242416) and serves as a board member of the Consortium of Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP). Additionally, he is an associate for the COMPASS Implementation Center (NSF #0137772) and is currently doing research sponsored by COMPASS on student understanding of linearity upon completion of a Standards-based mathematics curricula and working with the TASEL-M grant program.
